When Should Children Have Eye Exams?

Children should have their first eye exam at 6 months, again around age 3, and just before starting school. After that, yearly exams are recommended unless otherwise advised by your optometrist.

Some kids may need more frequent visits if they wear glasses, have a family history of eye conditions, or are showing signs of visual discomfort.

Vision & Learning Go Hand in Hand

Clear vision plays a big role in your child’s ability to learn, play, and connect with the world around them. Whether they are learning to read, copying notes from the board, or navigating the playground, strong visual skills support every step of their development.

When children struggle to see clearly, it can lead to frustration, lack of focus, or even misdiagnosis of learning challenges. They may not realize their vision is the problem, and parents or teachers might miss the early signs.

Regular eye exams can help identify and address issues like blurry vision, eye strain, or difficulty tracking.

What to Expect During Your Child’s Eye Exam

A pediatric eye exam is gentle, noninvasive, and age-appropriate. Depending on your child’s age and ability, we may evaluate:

  • Visual acuity and prescription
  • Eye movement, tracking, and coordination
  • Depth perception and colour vision
  • Eye health, including the retina and optic nerve
  • Signs of amblyopia (lazy eye) or strabismus (eye turn)

We make exams fun and approachable, with plenty of patience and clear explanations for both kids and parents.

Myopia Control for Kids

Myopia is more than just blurry distance vision. As it progresses, it increases the risk of eye disease later in life. That’s why we offer personalized myopia control strategies, which may include:

  • Specially designed glasses or contact lenses, including MiYOSMART, Stellest, MiSight, and more
  • Atropine eye drops
  • Lifestyle guidance to support healthy visual habits

Slowing down myopia early can help protect your child’s long-term eye health. Learn more about our approach to myopia control.

Support for Growing Eyes Starts Here

Your child’s eyes change as they grow, and regular eye exams help us stay ahead of those changes. At Optometry on Bronte, we partner with parents to support healthy vision from their younger years through the teen years.
